Mission and History

Our Story

Founded in 2016, The Women's History Museum of Zambia was set up to document and revive narratives of African history with a specific focus on women.

Our vision is to introduce new cultural and historical knowledge through demystifying, popularising and functionalising indigenous knowledge. To set an agenda of how African history on women is learned, how it is consumed and functionalised.

Our Mission

Our mission is to research, preserve and restore African indigenous knowledge and living histories focused on women. To introduce new cultural and historical knowledge through demystifying, popularising and functionalising indigenous knowledge. To set an agenda of how African history on women is learned, how it is consumed and functionalised.

Our Objectives

The five pillars of the Museum-to-Market Concept.

Pillar 1
Pattern design identification – mobilising a collection of indigenous pattern designs, folkloric expressions and indigenous knowledge from across Zambia.
Pillar 2
Protection and tracing of design origin – This process will involve sourcing, protection and tracing of origin of the patterns, folkloric expressions and indigenous knowledge to maintain the integrity of the design.
Pillar 3
Creation of a digital catalogue – cataloguing these cultural expressions and knowledge systems in a repository on a digital platform that is easily accessible to users.
Pillar 4
Production of the textile and other objects– producing textile and other artistic goods to test the viability of indigenous art products on the market
Pillar 5
Taking to market – Working with textile, apparel, and craft businesses to put the products on the market in order to create a cycle of production.
